Ik denk dat je ermee wegkomt, zeker als je Youp heet. Kwetsbare personen zoals professor Waas kun je tegenwoordig ongestraft in de hoek zetten. Dat ga ik dus niet doen met een man die zijn sporen verdiend heeft langs de Mekelweg. Ik wens hem een leuke nieuwe uitdaging. Iets in de commercialisering van de ziekenhuisbranche, bijvoorbeeld.

De meest geslaagde operatie van professor Waas en zijn YesDelft vond ik persoonlijk de gevulde koekenactie, twee jaar geleden. Toen werd er op mijn deur geklopt, door een hippe dame met een gevulde koek die op zoek was naar de meest entrepeneuriale wetenschapper van de TU Delft. Zo’n zoektocht leek me eigenlijk wat overdreven, omdat entrepeneuriale wetenschappers vanzelf in het oog horen te springen, maar een gevulde koek is nooit weg. Ik heb de hippe dame haarfijn alles uitgelegd over mijn laatste resultaten betreffende Diophantische approximatie van optimale allocatie. Ik geloof niet dat ze er veel van begreep en daarom heb ik die prijs van vijftigduizend euri uiteindelijk ook niet gekregen. Maar ach, vijftigduizend euri, dat dekt amper een maand in een krot op Cape Cod.

Zou het al mogelijk zijn om platte Youp-grappen te maken over het college van bestuur? Aan gevoel voor humor heeft men geen gebrek, gezien de benoeming van deze vleesgeworden Gooise gehaktbal tot culturele professor. Toch moet je oppassen. Een platte Youp-grap kan verkeerd uitpakken. Het cvb zit weliswaar in de hoek waar de NRC-klappen vallen, maar is allerminst kwetsbaar en dan moet je geen platte Youp-grappen maken. Kijk maar naar Geert Wilders. Die mocht jarenlang allerlei platte opmerkingen maken over moslims en Marokkanen. Maar nu zegt hij ook wat van Polen en Roemenen. En dat gaat toch echt een stap te ver.

World Water Day
While children around the world were busy cleaning ditches and streams with little nets last Tuesday as part of the World Water Day events, researchers from TU Delft, Unesco-IHE and the institutes Deltares and KWR Watercycle Research Institute decided join forces and start a research platform called Delft Urban Water. By combining expertise in the field of urban water, they aim to tackle future problems of increasing urbanisation, flooding and a worldwide shortage of good quality water.

Innovation
Implementation of information technology is generally associated with organisational changes and spurts of innovation. Yet, the connections between IT, organization, change and innovation are not as clear cut, argues Dr Fardad Zand (Technology, Policy and Management) in his thesis Information Technology and Firm Performance. Changes without corresponding IT investments do not result in higher productivity, and many enhancements that are attributed to IT are really the consequences of organisational change that is only initiated by IT.

Urban transport
Compact urban vehicles are the focus of conference being organized by D-incert (Dutch Innovation Centre for Electric Road Transport) that will be held next week on the campus of Twente University. The keynote speakers are Professor Wim de Ridder (future forms of sustainable mobility), Professor Wim Poelman (design and manufacture of vehicles) and Professor Jan Schoormans (consumer’s needs for mobility). 

The conference will be held on Tuesday, 29 March from 13:00 to 18:00. Admission is free, registration obligatory.

Geothermal lab
The Delft geothermal project DAP has equipped a geothermal lab at the site of a tomato breeding company, Duijvestijn, situated in Pijnacker. The new installation is close to the wells where another company, Ammerlaan, gets thermal heat for warming its greenhouses. Chris den Boer (DAP) says the lab will be used to measure four (and eventually six) wells. The main question is: how to keep geothermal heat profitable for as long as possible.

Maas awarded
Professor Marco Waas was awarded the ‘Achieve More Award’ in Brussels on 16 March. The Dean of 3mE is well-known for his enthusiasm for entrepreneurship, valorisation and innovation. ‘Achieve More’ is a European initiative that aims to provide small and medium-sized businesses in the IT-sector with financing and access to academic sources. Marco Waas was honoured as an Academic Enabler for providing access to academic knowledge and research facilities.
