Just like the municipality of Utrecht, the University and the University of Applied Sciences students and staff have been warned not to leave the buildings and not to come to the institutions for the time being. The students of the University of Applied Sciences are called on ‘not to panic and to stay calm and wait for further instructions’, reports the DUB news site that has reported on the incident in a live blog (Dutch only) since 12:00.

The University of Utrecht Medical Centre has opened the emergency hospital in De Uithof for the victims of the shooting in the Kanaleneiland neighbourhood. This is where, at about 10:45 this morning, shots were fired in a tram, reports the NOS in a live blog (Dutch only).

The police are not ruling out a terrorist attack. The threat level for the province of Utrecht has been raised to five, the highest level. The police is carrying out a manhunt for the shooter/shooters and have issued a description of a suspect.

The campaign for the Provincial elections has been suspended because of the shooting. An election debate planned for this evening at Erasmus University Rotterdam has been cancelled, reports Erasmus Magazine.
