An ugly face of Delft

A fascinating new exposition, that is totally inaccessible to internationals, is touring around Delft. This was supposed to be a positive little review of a new expo in Delft, and one especially written for international readers who will be looking for some fun, interesting things to do in Delft during the university’s ‘voorjaarsvakantie’ break.

Instead, I can report that the expo’s organisers are either (a) truculently trapped in a 1987 mindset; (b) they didn’t get the memo about Delft being an international university town; (c) they’re just too darn cheap to pay a few extra euro for some English-language texts; or (d) all of the above. Whatever the case, you get what you pay (or don’t pay) for then, so here goes.

The first impression one gets from the blue container thing plopped down on Delft’s Markt square is that of huge portaloo planted there for the Saturday market. But then you wonder why passersby are peeping into it with mysterious looks. So you also walk over to curiously peep inside. ‘Hey, great, it’s some kind of exposition.’ ‘Gezicht van Delft (Face of Delft) 2010’. When you enter, the first thing you see is the logo of Delft and the slogan ‘Creating History’. It’s an exposition of the stories of forty famous people from Delft over the last 500 years or so, displayed on panels running down the middle of the container-loo.

For international visitors, it’s all practically useless because all explanations are in Dutch only – except of course for the ‘Creating History’ in the Delft logo. Thanks. But still, the expo does have its charms for internationals: if you’re freezing in the cold, it’s not a bad option, as it’s warmer inside the container-loo than outside. I even saw a man walk in with his dog. Probably his dog was cold, too. And despite being a Dutch dog, probably it couldn’t read the exposition’s texts either. Whatever. The expo’s organisers blew it all around.

And that’s a shame, because the subject-matter is interesting, fascinating even, for us internationals: a city-sponsored campaign to find Delft icons, faces of the city, among the highly successful, creative people living and/or working in Delft. One of the nine finalists will be crowned the ‘Face of Delft 2010’. And what’s more, two of the finalists for icon-hood are actually from our very own TU Delft: professor Marco Waas, the dean of 3ME, and dr. Bob Ursem, the scientific director of TU Delft’s Botanical Garden.

And you can even vote for one of the nine nominees on a municipality website. Wait, scratch that: the site is also ‘Dutch only’, so you can’t, but anyway, if it did offer English as well you could’ve voted and that would’ve been fun too. The container-loo expo now moves to the Mekelpark for ten days. If you also happen to aspire to create history in Delft (despite your lack of Dutch) someday and are looking for inspiration, the expo is still perhaps worth a look. There are some nice photos to see. And at least entrance is free.

‘Gezicht van Delft (Face of Delft) 2010’ exposition. From 17-28 February located at the Mekelpark. To vote for the face of Delft: www.delft.nl/gezicht. Voting ends on March 1, 2010

In BK City konden we onze visie deels vormgeven.
