The biggest sports event for international students in the Netherlands ended last Saturday, with some 800 students from 11 Dutch universities having participated in the annual International Sport Day, held at the TU Sports Centre. Cheered on by some 40 international students, the 52 members of the TU Delft team competed in 7 events: indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, running, and chess.

Having learned from its experience last year, when lack of training meant the TU team failed to win a single event, this year’s TU team started training early, with each team having practiced once a week for the past two months. These training sessions were funded by the MSc Office. Better preparation and superior strategy seemed to be the keys to TU Delft team’s success. This year’s team brought home several trophies, including: first prize in basketball and badminton; second prize in volleyball and chess; and third prize for the running event. The team also took fourth place in table tennis and fifth place in soccer. Overall, the TU Delft team finished second, just behind the champions, the IHE team. IHE and TU Delft played tight matches in three events: the basketball final, the volleyball final, and the badminton men’s doubles final. TU Delft triumphed in basketball and badminton, but lost in volleyball. However, because TU Delft trailed IHE in other events, IHE finished in first place. Thanks to the TU team’s remarkable success this year, there’s hope that next year’s team will finish first.
