TU Delft restructures research

The TU Executive Board wants to terminate fifteen TU research programs in the coming three years. Other programs, moreover, will be scaled down. As a result of this purge, more than one hundred researchers % belonging to research groups that aren’t performing well enough or are doing research that’s also being done elsewhere % must look for new jobs either inside or outside the TU.

Chairman of the Board, Hans van Luijk, expects that many of these unlucky researchers will eventually lose their jobs.

That’s the preliminary result of the so-called ‘portfolio discussion’. The Executive Board’s plans will be presented to the work council and the student council next week. They must give their permission for the plans to go ahead.

The money that is saved by this purging operation – about 10 million euros – will be reinvested in a defined number of spearhead subjects, like nanotechnology, life science and technology, ICT-research and aerospace engineering’s steering research. The board also plans to invest in wind energy, but only if they are presented with a feasible research plan for it.

Three faculties will discontinue their business administration research program and will hire teachers from the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management to take over their courses. At Information Technology and System engineering the research program ‘algebra and geometry’ will be terminated. Fifteen people from this program will join other groups, but another five people must fear for their jobs. Further details about the groups to be terminated will be announced next week.

Marine and Transport Technology still must earn its place in the restructured TU. The Executive board only wants to continue this type of research if it’s improved and becomes more scientific.
