The team has adopted a dual approach to testing, says team leader Dr Stefan Lampaert (Faculty 3mE). Not only are they developing and building testing facilities, but they are also testing masks at the request of hospitals and other health organisations. “We are not an accredited test centre, so we cannot certify masks. But we can tell you if they’re crap.” Results from tests of various masks are published on their website.
Tests performed by the team are:
- a breathing resistance test
- testing of CO2 build-up in the mask
- a filter material penetration test
- a fit test on how well a mask fits to one’s face under action
The complexity of the test equipment has been kept to a functional minimum to allow others to build their own test facility. All design specifications will be published open-access.
