TU Delft Master’s students remain critical

As in previous years, TU Delft students are critical of their Master’s degree programmes. The programmes with the highest ratings were Systems & Control (3mE), and those with the lowest were Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences (A+BE).

The ratings were published in the Keuzegids Masters (guide to Master’s degree programmes) this week. The scores in the Keuzegids are based on the National Student Survey and to a small extent on the accreditation assessment by the NVAO (Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders).

Systems & Control scored 72 out of 100. This Master’s degree programme is a 3TU collaboration, and the Twente and Eindhoven programmes were given similar scores (72 and 74 points respectively). In particular, TU Delft students were positive about the programme content, lecturers and communication. The experts were impressed with the programme. The Keuzegids mentions ‘solid teaching, with decent facilities’.

Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences scored only 50 points, although this is better than the programme’s counterpart at Eindhoven University of Technology, which scored 48 points. TU Delft students’ ratings for the following aspects were slightly lower than average: content, lecturers, contact hours, academic training and practical focus. Communication and facilities were rated as average. The Keuzegids concludes that the extremely high student numbers and the often messy organisation appear to take their toll sometimes.

This year, the guide includes an overview of the 22 degree programmes with the highest scores. The best university Master’s degree programme in the overview, with a score of 96 points, is the Nanoscience programme offered by the University of Groningen. TU Delft is not included in this overview. It was given a total score of 59.5 points. Eindhoven University of Technology scored 61 points, and the University of Twente 62 points.

According to the guide, these scores are explained by the high study loads for engineering degree programmes: “You need to be particularly talented to cope with a degree programme at Delft. Drop-out rates are high in the first year. On average, TU Delft has done slightly better than last year, but the competition from the other universities of technology – especially Eindhoven – is noticeable.”
