TU Delft jumps in the rankings

TU Delft was recently ranked #23 out of all Engineering and Technology universities by The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2013-2014. This was a significant jump from a #32 ranking in 2012-2013.

This ranking, which is organized annually by Thomson Reuters, is the only global university rating system that judges universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. According to the THE website, “The top universities rankings employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available.”

“The rise of TU Delft in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ Engineering and Technology table 2013–14 is mainly explained by its higher score on the ‘Citation impact’ indicator – namely the average number of citations per paper normalized – of our papers in engineering journals,” said Professor Karel Luyben, Rector Magnificus of TU Delft. He said the people of the universitycan be proud of the increase in citation impact, but stressed that it is no reason to relax their efforts. “It is important that our scientists keep discussing their publication strategies with their colleagues,” said Professor Luyben. “High-quality scientific research cannot go without publishing in high-quality scientific journals.”

TU Delftalso showed an improvement on the international outlook score. According to the THE, this category looks at diversity on campus and to what degree academics collaborate with international colleagues on research projects. The increase for TU Delft is partly due to the fact that the percentage of international students grew during the last year. “We see that a lot of our international students share the position of TU Delft on international rankings via social media,” said Luyben. “This confirms the importance of protecting our leading international position and reputation.”

In comparison with other Dutch universities, TU Delftalso scored relatively well. Leiden University came in slightly higher in the overall rankings. However, TUD at #23 had the highest ranking amongst the Dutch Engineering and Technology universities, followed by Eindhoven University at #61 and University of Twente at #73.One contributing factor was that TU Delfthad the highest score in the teaching category of all universities in the Netherlands.

“TU Delft’s scientific reputation is largely determined by the quality of its research performance and – secondarily but intricately bound up with that performance – its educational programmes,” said Professor Luyben. “The results of recent research assessments indicate that a considerable number of TU Delft’s research programmes are seen as trendsetting on the global level.”
