A Thesis Market

Hard work, lots of research, succinct writing and a little bit of luck – while that’s a big chunk of your PhD, a small but also important piece of the puzzle is actually printing your thesis.

Promood, the university’s PhD representative body is organising a Thesis Market where printers and design firms from the Netherlands will interact with student answer all their queries. There will be seven printing companies and two design companies at the event. They will have stands and students can interact with them directly. The representatives usually carry samples of their work, so candidates can get an idea about what may work best for them and even compare prices.

“The biggest companies in the field in the Netherlands were invited for the event, and these were among those able to make it on the day. This is the second time this event is being organised. The first one was very successful because usually PhDs have to rely on word-of-mouth information but here they can get a sense of the practical issues related to printing,” said Anil Yalcin who handles External Communications for Promood.

Besides the stands, there will also be five presentations on the day – three by printers and two by designers. “We haven’t given them a brief, expect of course that they can’t malign any competitors. But, we expect that they will talk about the process, timeline, choice of paper, formatting and so on.”

About the decision to have designers at the event, he said, “Design is not easy for everyone and for most a thesis is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to print your own book. It’s important to think of a cover that reflects you and your research. Design firms usually meet with the client to get a sense of the person before they suggest a design – that’s probably what they will explain in their presentation as well,” said Yalcin.

Listening and meeting to the representatives will also give candidates a better sense of a timeline with regard to how soon they need to approach a printer and get the process started. “In terms of cost, visitors are free to ask questions about pricing and negotiate discounts. It’s not something we facilitate as a student organisation, but they are more than welcome to discuss these things with the representatives,” he said.
