Genetics talkshow
The Delft iGEM (genetically engineered machine) team kicks off the new season with a talkshow on Thursday 1 September.
Dirk Stemerding from the Rathenau Institute will host the session and talk with labour politician Gill’ard (PvdA), Prof. Luuk van der Wielen (B-Basic) and Frans Blom (Rathenau). Prior to the talkshow (9 PM) there will be a series of talks on the various aspects of synthetic biology, starting at 6:30 PM.
Waterbar
During the opening of the academic year next Monday, visitors will be offered drinks of their liking at the Waterbar. This sustainable drinks facility has been developed by Delft start-up, Project Helder, together with the Sustainable Dance Club. The bar made its debut at the Lowlands Festival. The Waterbar uses tapwater, cools and filters it, adds some vibes (with a speaker) and lemonade. “Using local water is more sustainable,” designer Esther Blase explains.
Dutch mountain
Skepticism turned into hope for many of the approximately 50 participants at the Dutch mountain assembly that was held Tuesday. The original idea for a 1 kilometre high and 5 kilometre wide mountain stems from Thijs Zonneveld, ex-cyclist and journalist for De Pers newspaper. At the meeting two engineering companies met with Dutch skiing and climbing associations to create a feasibility plan. If you are involved, let us know at delta@tudelft.nl
Foldable container
The foldable container developed by Delft start-up Holland Container Innovations (HCI) has passed the Container Safety Convention test programme. During the test the 40-feet steel container was loaded with double the maximum weight and hoisted into the air. It held. “It carried 60 tonnes, the weight of a fully loaded Boeing 737,” said HCI director Simon Bosschieter. HCI aims to bring its container, which can be folded to a quarter of its volume, to the market next year.
Elastic DNA
DNA seems to behave like the safety belt of a car. It gives when you pull gently, but if you jerk it, it ‘blocks’. Or so Delft researchers of the faculty of Applied Sciences found out. They quantified the molecular elasticity of DNA with the help of a neutron scattering spectrometer. Their findings were published this month in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters. Knowledge about the elasticity of DNA is fundamental to our understanding of its biological functions.
Natuurlijk, niks zo lekker als languit onder een dekentje als de regen met bakken uit de hemel komt. Maar hij gaat een keertje vervelen, die bank. En dan is het ‘Shoot Me Filmfestival’ in Den Haag wel een heel erg prettige uitkomst. Op de meest onverwachte locaties kun je internationale independent films kijken, van documentaires tot experimentele en speelfilms. Leuk: vaak is er nog live muziek bij ook.
Zo kun je op een saaie zondagmiddag dus opeens in de torenhoge nok van Het Strijkijzer aan het Rijswijkseplein zitten, en zomaar tot heel nieuwe inzichten komen. Want dat is wat het festival vooral hoopt te bereiken: door films te tonen met een actueel thema en een alternatieve invalshoek, stelt het algemeen geaccepteerde waarheden ter discussie.
Klinkt zwaar, is het niet (altijd). Er staan namelijk ook heel wat feestjes op het programma. én een ‘Slasher Night’ in De Gevangenpoort – een avond die je eigenlijk niet mag missen.
‘Shoot Me’ zou niet echt actueel zijn als het niet ook een paar competities op zou nemen in het programma. Naast de wel erg artistieke Different Angle-filmcompetitie is er een Dutch Music Video Competition. Kijk, dat klinkt al een stuk meer mainstream en dat is het ook, want tussen de deelnemers zitten onder anderen Bertolf met ‘Mr light’, Di-rect met ‘Times are changing’, Fedde le Grand met ‘Let me be real’ en Waylon met ‘Hey’. Zelfs leuk als je níet van films houdt. Laat die herfst maar komen.
