Science is a Religion

Ramanan Pitchumani, from India, recently received a PhD in Chemical Engineering from TU Delft. In the appendix to his thesis, ‘Breakage Characteristics of Particles and Granules’, he wrote the following brief discourse on God and science.

Since my childhood I was introduced to You by my late grandmother. She being a pious lady who always instilled in my mind that the whole world runs at Your command. Over the years I’ve pondered about You both from a scientific and metaphysical viewpoint. There wasn’t much success in the explanation of Your existence through the former. After all, how long has science existed? Since the birth of civilization, about 10,000 years. But You have existed since the birth of the Universe. So how can science ever be able to explain You in just a matter of 10,000 years! During the past 25 years, I’ve come to realize that most scientists tend to be atheists. When confronted with their beliefs, they say: “Prove the existence of God”. Let us reverse the same question to these scientists: “Prove that God doesn’t exist?” I’m sure no one will be able to answer that question.

Whenever I look back in the time, it makes me wonder what it was that helped me complete this PhD? Who was the One who made me pursue my work, kept my spirits alive and gave me energy? Who was the One who helped me get new ideas, provided me with the right resources at the right time? The sudden rush of ideas came at the right time and the right place. I simply cannot discard these as coincidences. The only answer for all the above questions is You! You are the Supreme One to whom I give credit and shall be grateful for the rest of my life. There would be a day when a task would appear impossible. A simple prayer would make it appear extremely trivial.

I%ve always considered science to be a kind of religion. The basic laws of science revolve around three forces in nature, namely, gravitational, electrostatic and nuclear forces. There is however no physical explanation of these forces, but many mathematical equations. Science has always taken the help of mathematics to explain physical things or happenings with just mere numbers. Hence science is a belief, even experiments are beliefs, and then the results are interpreted just as in other religions where the verses in sacred books are interpreted. The goal of science and other religions is the same: to explain all happenings in this universe, and for the betterment of mankind. In some way science strives to explain the existence of God, which is the ultimate challenge. Yet, most religions do explain God-science is far behind. Science is a religion in a very infant stage. In other words, the goal of both science and religion is the pursuit of truth, and God helps us find it.
