Run for a cause

Run for a good cause with CampusRun 2014. This event will take place on June 12 2014 and is an initiative of Gezelschap Leeghwater, the study association for mechanical engineering students at TU Delft.

Gezelschap Leeghwater was founded in 1867 and is the oldest study association in the Netherlands. The goals of this association reach beyond providing mechanical engineering students with academic support. According to their website, “We want to convey that we stand strong together as a university to contribute to societal interest.”

The CampusRun 2014 is one example of putting that goal into action. The event, which is in its second year, will be raising money for Spieren voor Spieren (Muscles for Muscles). According to their website some 20,000 children in the Netherlands suffer from muscular disease. By raising awareness and funding for this issue, the charity strives to make life better for these children through pioneering research and treatment.

Last year the event raised around €5,000 for the Learn! Foundation, a charity which builds schools in developing countries. Marjolein Knijff, promotions commissioner of this year’s event, said they hope to outdo that amount this year. “We made a huge list of charities,” she said, “and chose one that we thought everyone could be supportive of.”

The event is also evolving according to Knijff, a  chemical engineering student. She explained that last year it was only organized for mechanical engineering students to participate. Although the first edition was very successful, this year organizers wanted to make it bigger and better and opened it up all students and staff at the university. In addition, teams of technology companies and other runners are welcome to participate.

The event will include run distances of 2.5 km, 5 km, 10 km and 15 km, which offers something for every fitness level. Prizes will be given for the fastest male and female in each category as well as a prize for the most money raised. The cost to participate is only €5 for TU Delft students and €15 for anyone else. Participants can also get their own webpage as part of the event to help solicit extra donations.

The run will start at the 3mE building, and there will also be a social event following the run where drinks and food will be on offer. For more information on CampusRun 2014 visit their website.
