Restoring starlight

For his PhD thesis, Dr Rogier Ellenbroek (3mE faculty) developed a control system for deformable mirrors in telescopes.
For centuries astronomers have been polishing the large mirrors inside their telescopes in order to obtain higher resolution images of the stars and planets.

But for telescopes with a diameter of more than one meter, polishing was not the answer. Turbulence in the atmosphere, leading to quickly changing temperatures, humidity, pressure and CO2 concentrations, causes the refractive index of air to vary, which in turn leads to blurry images.

To compensate for variations in the refractive index, deformable mirrors, are placed in the optical path of large ground-based telescopes. When part of a wavefront from a far away celestial object is slowed down during the last small segment of its journey through our atmosphere, it will hit an elevated section of the mirror. Meanwhile, the runners-up will hit a valley. With this kind of compensation, all photons will arrive simultaneously on the telescope’s detector.

For his PhD thesis, which he defended on the 8 November, Rogier Ellenbroek developed a control system that can efficiently regulate the actuators. “The European Southern Observatory is currently developing the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), the world’s largest ground-based telescope with a diameter of 39 meters,” says Ellenbroek. “Such a large telescope needs a much more efficient control system, because the computer power that you need to control the telescope increases with the fourth power of the telescope diameter. Consequently, you need an absurd amount of computing power. This is one of the bottlenecks of the E-ELT at the moment.”

One way to tackle this problem is by dividing the deformable mirror into different modules that can communicate with one another. Ellenbroek worked on an algorithm that allows for this kind of inter-module communication. “This is very tricky,” he says.

In order for all the mirror’s elements and their actuators to know how to reposition themselves, they must know how far the photons they will receive are lagging behind or are in advance, compared to the rest of the photons, yet their sensors only give them relative figures. In other words, they must know the global shape of the wavefront. Ellenbroek: “Compare the actuator with a person standing in the mountains with an altitude map showing contours, but no height labels. If that person knows the height of some point on the map, he can count and trace the contours to determine his altitude. But he would need almost the entire map to do this.”

Ellenbroek thought of a way to communicate incoming wavefront shapes to all mirror modules by identifying the behavior of the air bubbles, pressure and humidity that are blown over the telescope by the wind. “It’s like a mountainous landscape that passes by,” he says. By using insights of this “landscape” flowing past, Ellenbroek was able to improve the control system.
