Quick Library Introduction

The TU Delft Library is an outstanding resource for students, staff and visitors from around the world. However, its size and the sheer scale of its collection and tools can be overwhelming to new students.

To help this group find its way, the library is offering a Quick Library Introduction workshop on March 28, 2013.

The Quick Library Introduction workshop will last for two hours (from 10:00-12:00) and will teach attendees about the available resources. The workshop also includes a complete guided tour of the facilities and the huge library depot. The informational section of the workshop is broken up into three parts: finding information, accessing e-materials and managing the information.

Attendees will learn how to pinpoint the location of the materials they need in the library. The workshop will teach how to use the Virtual Knowledge Centers to find subject-specific information. It will also include training on the library’s online search engine “Discover”.

In addition to all of the physical books and periodicals available at the library, visitors also have access to a huge collection of online resources. Attendees will learn how they can use “Discover” to find full-text e-books, journal articles, reports, dissertations and other documents.

Nicole Will, TU Delft Library Head of Education Support explained, “The participants will search in the broad collection of e-journals, e-books and discover the variety of databases that are available, like the multidisciplinary databases Scopus and Web of Science and subject specific database like Scifinder, IEEE Xplore, for example”.

The library depot tour is certainly a highlight of the visit. The TU Library collection has more than 860.000 titles in it including e-books, doctoral theses and 37.000 books published before 1900.

Will stated, “[All of this] information has to be managed and therefore we present tools like Endnote and Mendeley”. These citation management tools are extremely useful to undergraduate and graduate students.

Once attendees know which materials they want to borrow, the workshop will show them how to go about checking them out. As of mid-February, all books automatically renew for four week periods for up to six months as long as no one else has requested them.

Anyone who is a new student or who would like to become more familiar with the library resources should take time out to participate in this workshop.
