Platform for sustainable development

To engage TU Delft’s international community in the exchange of information on sustainable development, the association Osiris is organizing activities in English.

In 2002, as a spin-off of a TU Delft course on sustainable development, a few students founded the association Osiris (Organization of Students for Information and Reflection on Interdisciplinarity and Sustainability). Osiris is also the name of the Egyptian God of flora and fauna, which the association has chosen to be its benefactor, because the annual floods of the Nile (said to be caused by Osiris) is a sustainable source of fertile ground.

The association wants to be the fertile ground for the promotion of sustainability, in order to increase the support for and appeal of sustainable development. Osiris therefore serves as a communication platform for discussion and information exchange, while also supporting a network of people interested in sustainable development. The information exchange is accomplished by organizing lectures, workshops, excursions and symposia, and via the association’s website, which provides current news about sustainability-related topics and articles to download.

One of the Osiris’ future objectives is to become an intermediary between students who want to do internships on sustainable development-related issues with companies that are searching for such students.

In order to give the growing international community an opportunity to take part in the information exchange on sustainable development, Osiris is now organizing activities in English on a regular basis. On May 18, a lecture by Wolfgang Lutz, an independent consultant on energy efficiency and renewable energy, will begin by offering a brief overview of the current issues in the energy sector, after which he’ll discuss how energy efficiency programs came into being, their main results and problems that occurred in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

Focusing specifically on Argentina, Lutz will provide a more detailed analysis of energy efficiency that country, including a historical overview of 25 years of hope and disappointment with respect to enabling energy efficiency, the failures and their causes, the role of international donors and what might need to be changed in future.

Osiris believes that sustainable development can only be achieved by the cross-fertilization of the different types of science and knowledge. Everyone interested in sustainable development is therefore invited to become a member of the association, initiate discussions, suggest interesting ideas for activities and/or become actively involved in their organization. The lecture ‘Energy Efficiency in Latin America’ is on May 18, at Het Voorhuys in Delft.
