Nieuwe studentbestuurders twitter-happy

Lindau conference
Two TU Delft researchers have been invited to participate in the Lindau Conference in Germany from June 27 to July 2, 2010. Marijn van Loenhout and Katja Nowack (both from the faculty of Applied Sciences) will be two of the 12 Dutch researchers joining 700 other young researchers from the across the world at this prestigious conference. Some 60 former Nobel Prize winners will also attend the conference.

Engelenbak wins
The 28 residents of Delft’s student house, De Engelenbak, have won the title of ‘Student House of the Year 2010’. This national student house competition was organized by studenten.net. The awarding of this title was part of an end of the year party held at Club Air in Amsterdam, where the ‘Student of the year’ and the Sloggi ‘Best Student Butt’ awards were also handed out.

Vermeer lecture
On Thursday, June 10, Herman Koch, TU Delft’s guest writer, will present his Vermeer Lecture, entitled ‘Eureka’, on which occasion his masterclass students’ results will also be presented. The Vermeer Lecture, which is open to the public, will be delivered in the TU Delft Aula building (Auditorium/third floor) and will start at 20:00. Entry tickets cost €2.50 for TU Delft students and staff and can be purchased at the i-TU counter in the Aula.

Future aircraft
On Wednesday, 16 June, students and staff can learn about the technology and development of the aircraft of the future in lecture room A of the faculty of Aerospace Engineering (AE). No prior registration is required. AE researchers will discuss their recent work on the ‘sustainable aircraft of the future’. The result is a futuristic concept in which the wings, cabin and engines are merged into a single shaped ‘blended wing body’. The presentation is from 10:00 to 11:50.

Design politics
Are urban planners, architects and politicians to blame for poverty, societal unrest and urban violence? This is a relevant question following the recent Dutch elections. “After 9 June, the Netherlands will be ready for a new design: politicians, urban planners and architects will need to work together on this challenge,” stated Wouter Vanstiphout in his inaugural address as Professor of Design as Politics at TU Delft’s faculty of Architecture. In his inaugural speech, he proposed that design does not exist adjacent to politics, nor that design is ‘part of’ politics: design is politics. In light of the recent election, momentous decisions must be made about the economy, housing, integration and segregation, and the environment. According to Vanstiphout, the Netherlands has reached a turning point where the traditional consensus model can no longer be relied upon to produce workable results: “The economy is forcing us to make cuts, and these cuts are forcing us to make choices, spatial choices, too. Whether we like it or not, the Netherlands will have to be redesigned.”

Grassroots
An informative event has been organized to round off the Grassroots projects for 2009-2010. This special lunchtime event for all teaching staff will be held on Thursday, 17 June, from 12:00-14:00, at TPM’s A-wing, 1st floor. The teaching staff who participated in the Grassroots project will show how they have used ICT in their teaching over the past year. During the event, presentations will be given on clickers, Wimba and the new Blackboard 9.

Lectures rooms
Many of TU Delft’s lecture rooms will be renovated between 2010 and 2013. Most buildings on the campus were built in the 1960s and the lecture rooms are now in a poor condition. The improvements will relate to health, safety and environmental requirements, ergonomics, climate, acoustics, lighting and presentation facilities (sound, ICT). Work will start this summer on the lecture rooms in the EEMCS and 3mE faculties. In total, work will be carried out on around 50 lecture rooms, including a few smaller ones.
