Ode to Applied PhysicsThe TU should be proud of their applied physics education, according to review commission judges. A verbal report issued by the review commission last Thursday was an ode to excellence.

The department’s BSc and MSc educations were judged to be good. Prof. Jan Sprengers, chairman of the commission, says the applied physics education now has a clear technical profile. The commission did have a few minor criticisms, such as a lack of measurable goals regarding study tempo. Sprengers also recommended that a full-time female professor be hired.

Dish remains Hotel

Two weeks ago TU Delft sold the Dish hotel (Kanaalweg) to Duwo. Although Delta 4 reported that DUWO planned to convert the hotel into student housing for foreigners, this is not the case. Duwo’s director, Jan Benschop, says that Dish will remain a three-star hotel, although parts of the building will be used as a student center: “A good hotel belongs there to. Duwo and Dish compliment one another.”

New Delft train tunnel

With only two train tracks, Delft is a bottleneck on the Hague-Rotterdam train line, causing even more delays for the beleaguered NS. An article examining the various proposals for building additional tracks and a train tunnel in Delft, currently being considered by the city council, can be found on our website: www.delta.tudelft.nl
