News in brief

Costly permitsLast week, the Immigration and Naturalization Office (IND) decided to raise the price of residence permits to 430 euros. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) seems to be aware that this steep price rise means that Holland is becoming a less attractive place for skilled and highly educated foreigners to live and work.

The OCW Ministry is therefore counting on the next government, which will take power after the January 2003 national elections, to reverse the decision to raise prices. If not, the OCW Ministry is considering a special measure to deem Holland a ‘knowledge country’, because in the rest of Europe residence permits cost on average only 50 euros. Officials at the OCW are still waiting for the Ministry of Integration to formally respond to their proposal.

International student games

In March 2003, international students from Dutch universities throughout the country will compete against each other in various sports: soccer, volleyball, baseball, table tennis, chess, darts, badminton….

Foreign exchange students and MSc students on TU Delft teams will be permitted to train at the TU Sport Center prior to the event. If you’d like to join one of the competing TU teams and register for training sessions, please contact Mrs. Mary Dotman (M.Dotman@tudelft.nl)
