Next year, TU student numbers will increase as all courses switch to the semester system. Oras estimates that approximately 2,500 study places will be needed next year, instead of the current 600. They are calling for extra study places and expanded library opening times. Furthermore, they suggest building extra study rooms in the Aula. TU librarian, Dr. Leo Waaijers, admits that the library is crowded, but before taking action, he wants to see what happens next year.
Dimes trains Chinese
TU’s research school Dimes will help Beijing%s Tsing Hua University set up a microelectronics training and research centre. That’s the deal Dr. Nico de Voogd, president of TU’s executive board, signed last Tuesday in China. De Voogd thinks the co-operation is ”interesting, because a lot of international companies making chips are settling in China.” Indirectly, the deal should also attract more Chinese MSc and PhD students. ”And Dimes will get a good name in China,” says Dr. Kees Beenakker, of Dimes. ”Tsing Hua University is the most important university of China and the only one with a clean room.”
Cafe wanted in Master plan
With the executive board promising that the costs won’t adversely effect the amount of money currently spent on education and research, the student council has approved the Master plan for the new TU campus. To make the campus livelier, however, they’re still in favour of the tram running over the Mekelweg. Furthermore, they want the executive board to encourage student societies to start a cafe in the main TU service building.
