News in Brief

Hundreds of complaints about examsLast term, the student union, AAG, received 131 complaints about teachers taking too long to correct exams.

Students could complain via AAG’s website (www.meld.tudelft.nl). The faculty Design, Construction and Production received the most complaints; but this may be due to AAG’s website link to their own exam results webpage, which enabled angry students to complain directly. AAG-member, Steven van Vegten, tried to check all complaints with the various student administration offices, but not all wanted to cooperate. Friday, the student union will present the preliminary results to Rector Magnificus Wakker. The new complaints webpage has resulted in a change of attitudes. The rector discusses complaints with the various deans, who then contact the teachers involved. One teacher has even written a letter of apology.

Delft wins year’s best invention

A lightweight LP-gas tank invented by Delft alumnus, Jan-Jaap Koppert, has been recognised as this year’s best invention, out of two thousand entries. Koppert wins 15 thousand guilders. The donut shaped tank weighs eighty percent less than a traditional gas tank and is able to withstand a crash at fifty kilometres per hour or a small fire. The tank consists of three layers. On the inside, a plastic polyethyl layer makes the tank LPG-proof. Around this, super strong fibres are wound, so that the fibres are loaded in their strongest direction, longitudinal. The fibres aren’t fixed with resin, but protected by the last layer, which is a coating.
