News in brief

PlagiarismDutch Under-Secretary for education Mark Rutte is now researching the possibility of expelling students from higher education if they are caught committing acts of plagiarism in their graduation thesis.

Interviewed in the monthly magazine ‘Opzij’, Rutte said that such a penalty is indeed harsh, “but I find it absolutely terrible for students to cheat on such an important text as their final thesis. Currently the penalty for plagiarism is a one-year suspension, but I don’t believe this is enough for final thesis plagiarism.”
Stylos

Architecture student association Stylos will make a price request for the design of a new pavilion before the end of the year. The old pavilion burnt down last summer. Stylos is exploring the possibility of erecting a temporary structure. The charred remains of the old pavilion have yet to be removed, however. The removal company that was hired to clean up the site across from the Architecture faculty forgot to apply for a removal permit. Stylos would like to build a new pavilion and is hoping to receive funds from private sponsors and the TU Faculty of Architecture. Stylos treasurer Erik van ‘t Schip remains rather skeptical of Stylos’ chances of raising the funds, however: “During the alumni days we presented our plans for constructing a new pavilion, but there wasn’t much enthusiasm for it. Still, I hope that we will ultimately be given a substantial amount of money for the project.”

Sustainable development

TU Delft and Royal Dutch Shell will jointly organize the 2005 Shell Bachelor Master Prize, which is awarded to a Bachelor and Master student whose thesis focuses on sustainable development. All TU Delft students who believe their thesis qualifies for the prize have until 31 December 2005 to apply. Six students will be chosen for a shortlist and be invited to the final on February 16, 2006, when they will each have two minutes to persuade the jury they deserve the prize. First prize for the Bachelor winner is 1,000 euro; first prize for the Master student winner is 2,500 euro. The jury members include Hans van Luijk, President of TU Delft, Professor Wubbo Ockels, of TU Delft’s Aerospace Engineering Faculty, and Rein Willems, President of Royal Dutch Shell.

Snellius

L.G. Snellius, the TU Delft student association for geodesy students, has closed down. The reason: there aren’t enough geodesy students at TU Delft. Currently the student association has 30 members, but in 2003, TU Delft terminated its Geodesy degree program. ‘Old’ Geodesy students are able to finish their studies, but “it’s no longer a normal study experience,” says Walter Vroom of the Snellius society. Some subjects are no longer taught and for others students meet individually with their teachers.
