New events coming to TU Delft

If you’re looking to learn more about things around Delft or offer your opinion on a controversial topic, several upcoming events co-hosted by Delta have got you covered.

The first is the Living Survival Guides, which provide in-depth information about a variety of topics that might interest members of TU Delft’s international student community. A collaboration between Delta, Studium Generale and Sports and Culture, the Living Survival Guides offer a look at everything from the history of Dutch food to the best places in Delft to sign up for a gym membership. A future edition may also take aim at how difficult it can be to speak a second (or third or fourth…) language.

“In an earlier edition of the Survival Guide we discussed Dunglish, the particular flavour of English practised by some Dutch,” said Frank Nuijens, Delta‘s Editor-in-Chief. “We intend to explore the various English language peculiarities that non-English speakers on campus from other countries experience.”

The first Living Survival Guide of the 2016/2017 academic year is scheduled to take place during Introduction Week on August 23, 2016 between 15:00 and 17:00 in the Aula Conference Centre. It will focus on English language media outlets in the Netherlands. The event will also feature a speed dating session, a pub quiz and drinks. Additional Living Survival Guides will follow throughout the autumn beginning on September 23, 2016 in the newly renovated Sports Cafe in the Sports & Culture building.

But if you’d like to participate in a boisterous discussion about current events, a series of upcoming English language debates might be up your alley as well. Along with Delta, they’ll be hosted by the TU Delft Debating Club and Studium Generale. “The Delta debate series is brand new,” Nuijens said. “We’re very excited to work together with SG in organising an event that will offer students the opportunity to sharpen their debating skills on subjects they really care about.”

The first debate is scheduled for September 22, 2016 in the Prinsenkwartier Cultural Centre. The doors will open at 19:00 and the debate, which will cover a topic of interest to many students, is set to begin at 19:30. “Following recent events on campus, it will deal with the question of religion,” said co-organiser Lester Lardenoye. “On a campus that facilitates all manner of social and cultural activities beyond the curriculum, should we also make room for religion?” Refreshments will be provided. A second debate is scheduled for November 24, 2016 but the topic has yet to be decided.
