Nanoscience gets bigger

The search for new energy just got a big boost. TU Delft’s Kavli Institute of Nanoscience has a new partner – University of California Berkeley – in the search for energy solutions.

In October, the Kavli Foundation announced the establishment of a fifth institute exploring Nanoscience.

Based in California, the Kavli Foundation is an organisation dedicated to advancing scientific research for the benefit of humanity. They have centres around the world dedicated to research in astrophysics, neurosciences and theoretical physics. In the field of Nanoscience they have centres at Cal Tech, University of Cornell and Harvard. TU Delft is currently the only such institute in Europe. “The league of the four Kavli Institutes in Nanoscience was already very strong but has been made even stronger by the addition of the new institute,” said Professor Cees Dekker, Kavli Institute, Delft.

Though it’s early to talk about collaboration, Dekker does foresee possibilities of joint projects. On October 31 2013, the director of the new institute visited TU Delft and talked about how Nanoscience can help in the global carbon cycle. “That is core of the new Kavli Energy Nanosciences Institute at Berkeley,” said Dekker.

According to reports, the institute in Berkeley will be supported by a grant of 20 million dollars. Half will be provided by the foundation and Berkeley will pay the remainder.
