MSc students team up on Sports Day

TU Delft’s MSc students competed against other international students at the International Sports Day, held last Saturday at the Erasmus University Sport Centrum.

They may have lost more than they won, but they had a lot of fun, according to Retno Setianingsih, a first-year MSc student and TU team member.

”International Sports Day was a chance for foreign students to meet and have a nice day. This year eight teams participated. We had forty players competing in six different sports on our team, plus around twenty supporters. Learning from last year’s experience, we didn’t aim to win this year, but rather to just have fun and enjoy the games.

About five hundred students took part. I had no idea there were so many international students in Holland! It was a bit crazy and hectic being in the crowd, but we managed to get through, change our clothes, put on our light blue TU Delft T-shirts and make it to the main hall in time for the opening ceremony. Then, the games began, but because most of our teams were playing their matches at the same time in different halls, our supporters really had to rush around!

Our basketball team was definitely the smallest team on the court. Our players were half the size of the other guys, but bravely we fought, and we beat Twente University. Our volleyball team wasn’t ready for their first match, but they got better during ensuing games and won once. The indoor soccer team was quite strong, winning twice, drawing twice and losing four times; and our badminton and table tennis players were pretty good too, winning more than they lost. We weren’t very good in Squash though, and our new players were surprised by the ball coming at them from all directions!

Overall, we improved this year, finishing fifth out of eight teams. Last year we finished second to last. During the after-dinner party the organising committee awarded trophies to the winners of each event. Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with any trophies, but no matter. We came to play sports and have fun, and a good time was had by all, as well as free lunch and dinner. Hopefully, we’ll be back next year with an even stronger team. But one parting piece of advice for next year’s team: Make sure you practice before the real games begin!”
