Mathematics and Mechanics Helpdesk reopens at the TU Library

From June 18 to July 2, the Mathematics and Mechanics Helpdesk will be open at the TU Library to assists Bachelor students with their exam preparations.

Organized in cooperation with education advice and counseling agency Inwijs, the Helpdesk is located in Project Room Asia and is open from Monday to Thursday between 13:00 to 17:00. Students are invited to approach the Helpdesk tutors with their questions in relation math and mechanics.

“The library wants to assist students in studying for their exams,” says Applied Mathematics master’s student and Helpdesk tutor Sander van Dijk. “This is a way to encourage students to come to the library.” Depending on the exam period, at least three student tutors with backgrounds in mathematics and mechanics will be available for consultation. “Mostly, we receive at least ten questions a day,” Van Dijk says. “When a specific subject has an exam, you see a lot of students coming for that subject. It can be mostly questions on analysis. I think there are quite a lot of students from different backgrounds who ask for our help. We notice that when we sit here for a few days, students from the same courses who have an exam come to us with similar questions.”

In previous years, the Helpdesk was only open upon request. Given the increased demand for tutoring assistance during exam weeks, the Library opted to make the Helpdesk available to students for a longer period of time. “I had a problem with a question and [the Helpdesk] is the only place to get help for math, so that’s why I came here,” says Terence Celestina. The Aerospace Engineering student visited the Helpdesk to ask for assistance in preparation for his linear algebra exam. “I’m very satisfied with their help,” Celestina says. “[The tutors] gave me a thorough analysis of my question, went over the question with me and gave me a step-by-step solution to the problem, so it was very helpful. I would definitely suggest that students come here for help.”

Students who are unable to visit the library Helpdesk may ask their questions online via Blackboard IM, under the Helpdesk name Maths & Mechanics. Tutors will be available to chat with students who may need their assistance. The instant messenger application can be found in the bottom left of the Blackboard homepage.
