Lonely planet

There’s no time like the holiday season to wake your sense of loneliness, especially when you’re thousands of miles from home. Four years later, I still clearly remember my first Christmas Eve in Holland.

With no family gathering to go to, I simply roamed the streets, wishing to salvage whatever scraps of holiday atmosphere I could. Lights shone from every window as a savoury smell of roast goose hung in the air. A large family sat around an exquisitely laid-out table, brimming with beautifully prepared food. At that moment I felt poorer than even the Little Match Girl, since at least she had a bundle of matches to help her ‘meet’ her grandma.

Living in this transient modern society, with increasing numbers of people like us willing to move away from home for work or study, losing and recreating social relationships has become common practice. Still, feeling lonely or even isolated is tough, and it’s the first phase all international students must climb their way out of, although how long it takes varies from person to person. Some people have already found social replacements for their family and old friends by the second quarter of the new school year, while others, after various failed attempts, simply retreat into their caves. It’s true that as we age it becomes more difficult to build social relationships – not to mention overcoming all the cultural, linguistic and other barriers waiting ahead.

Realising this sad truth, some of us use social networking sites like Facebook as effective coping mechanisms. For me though these sites had adverse effects on my loneliness. When I first arrived in Holland, I also plunged myself into the Facebook hype for the sake of its convenience and wide outreach. Trying to re-establish my social life asap, I was exponentially increasing my Facebook friendbase. By the end of the first quarter I had added 347 Facebook friends; however, I quickly realised that not only did this number crunching not bring me any reassuring extensions, but also my Facebook friends’ status updates and party pictures simply served as reminders of how much better everyone else was at making friends and having fun.

Just because we’re social animals who inherently seek company doesn’t mean we should fear being alone. Some of the most profound loneliness can happen when there’re plenty of people around. Being alone can also be enjoyable, and that’s why the words ‘loneliness’ and ‘solitude’ are close relations. Nowadays, I tend not to make a big deal out of loneliness; instead, I prefer to see it as a biological signal, a signal that says it’s time to forget about eating leftovers and call a friend.

De kamer
Ten eerste: don’t worry.

Toch nog even inlezen? www.oli.tudelft.nl.

Get used to it.

In alle andere gevallen: forget it.

Welkom in Delft!
