Hyperloop on its way

The Delft Hyperloop capsule is on its way to California, where it will join the competition next January 2017.
The Hyperloop Pod Competition will take place in Hawthorne, California from January 27 to 29, 2017.

Thirty teams will have their ‘run of glory’ through a 1.5-kilometre long tube, built by SpaceX, with speeds up to 300-400 km/h.

The Delft trump card is the undercarriage, says team captain Tim Houter. It combines the magnetic levitation (with permanent magnets), safety and stabilisation in a light, safe and elegant design.

During the test, an array of sensors will record data on speed, vibrations, friction, and more.

By the end of the month, the Delft Hyperloop team will travel to California to perform a number of tests and thus prepare for the trial in January. “We will do all to end as high as possible in the competition,” stated the press release.

There will be another competition weekend in the summer next year, but there will be no team from Delft present.

Houter said: “The announcement for the 2nd Hyperloop competition came the end of August. By that time, already a lot of students have either committed to a different project like another DREAM team, board or committee, or have decided to finish the year of courses they have just started. Therefore, due to a lack of availability of full-time people it was just simply too late for gathering a new team”

Missing out on the second competition doesn’t mean that the Delft Hyperloop team will be ‘out of the loop’ henceforth. Houter thinks another team can pick up relatively quickly and join the competition at a later stage.
