Humans of TU Delft: Henko Engberts

Who are the people who study and work at TU Delft? We meet them in Humans of TU Delft where they talk about their work or other activities. During an entrepreneurship class, Henko Engberts and two fellow students came up with an idea. They put that idea into action and founded Oatz, offering a healthy option for breakfast on the go.

“We started the company in January. We are just three master’s students at TU Delft and we all did entrepreneurial courses just as an extra class outside of the normal courses. In one of those classes we had to found our own company and we realised that we never encounter something like healthy breakfast where you can get things to go. Of course you can get fast food, but it’s all unhealthy so we saw a gap.

‘Now we serve a vegan, on-the-go breakfast of warm oatmeal with fresh fruits and nuts’

I’m in offshore engineering, one of us is in aerospace and the other in industrial engineering. So we are three very different students. We met on the course and we didn’t know each other before that. During the course we did questionnaires in the city and around campus and we asked people if they would like breakfast in the morning where you can basically cycle by and get something to go. That’s how it started. Now we serve a healthy, vegan and on-the-go breakfast of warm oatmeal with fresh fruits and nuts.

It’s going great so far and we want to expand now. We would like to have more locations where we can sell. We’re now in the Free Zone on campus so that’s great. We would like to try opening at train stations and expand bit by bit.

I’m starting my graduation now. One partner is also close to graduating and the other just finished in the summer. My partners have other startups as well. Right now this takes about ten hours a week for each of us, but if it keeps going well we’ll spend more time on it.”
