Humans of TU Delft: Frank Broy

First-year computer science student Frank Broy says playing dodgeball is a fun way to relieve stress. He has already found 50 people on campus who want to join him.

“I played dodgeball just for fun in high school and I really liked it. Back then I was already thinking about creating a club to play more regularly and to make it more popular in Luxembourg. It’s not yet an official sport there. It was my last year of high school and I had to focus on exams so I thought maybe I would wait to do it at university where it might be more popular. I came here and wanted to focus on my studies, but now after a few months I thought it might be a good time to start something.

I began looking for people and I hung up some flyers around the buildings on campus. I got a few people, but it wasn’t quite enough. I was trying to figure out how to bring more attention to the idea and I found this group on Facebook and posted something. It grew really fast and we have almost 50 people already.

I found out that the Netherlands plays in the European championships of dodgeball, they actually have a national team. I was excited to learn that and it made me realise there would probably be more people here interested in playing. To play competitively there are fixed rules, so you have to follow those. But sometimes you play just for fun and you can add alternative rules to the sport.

‘We’ll see what the future brings’

I’m going to meet with the people at X to arrange all the details, to get the space to play and whatever we need. If it goes well, maybe we will be able to start an association or even play competitively. We’ll see what the future brings. For now, we hope to start with training twice a week and maybe organise competitions during the weekend.

It was always a sport that allowed me to forget everything related to school or things that were stressful. I had to quit other sports to focus on my studies, but playing dodgeball makes me feel especially relieved from the stress of university. And it makes you feel better because it helps you get your stress out in a fun way.”
