First open air market on campus

The very first open air event of its kind, Mekel Market, is set to take place on the TU Delft campus. Being billed as a “lifestyle” event, the market will feature vendors selling their creations or vintage items, food, drink and entertainment.

Following on the heels of the successful indoor Pop-up Market in November, the Unit Sports & Culture (S&C) decided to take the next event outdoors. According to Anne van Straten, who works in Marketing and Communications for TU Delft, they hope to have around twenty vendors and young creators offering things for sale. Items will include clothing, art, accessories, handmade goods and vintage items, keeping the student budget in mind. Refreshment options will include slow coffee, homemade cake, local beer and cheese.

During the market there will be live music spun by DJ Mozaïc, who combines ethnic music with a modern beat, as well as an open air cinema. The other entertainment during Mekel Market is, in part, setting the stage for another upcoming event called A Day of Wonder. The Indien, a Dutch band described as having a contemporary, soulful sound inspired by music of the 60’s and 70’s, will give live performances at both events. In addition, Mekel Market will host the first round of the Sing Song Contest, which gives local singers and songwriters a chance to showcase their talent. The winner of the four performers will then go on to compete at A Day of Wonder, where they will fight for a chance to record their own EP. Scheduled for June 5 at TU Delft, A Day of Wonder aims to combine technology, music, food and art in a festival setting.

The first market in November had around 350 visitors, almost all of which were TU students, and organizers are hoping for similar numbers this time. Van Straten noted that there will also be a market at the Day of Wonder and S&C hopes to plan more in the future if they prove successful. She also said that this event is being organized in the context of the Living Campus and Free Zones project of TU Delft.

Mekel Market will take place on Tuesday, May 19 from 17:00 to 23:00 at the Aula. There is no entry fee to the market, but if you want to buy something remember to bring cash as bank cards will not be accepted. For more information visit their Facebook page.
