Studenten die al tijdens hun schakelprogramma als masterstudent stonden ingeschreven, lopen eerder tegen de langstudeerboete aan. Staatssecretaris Zijlstra wil voor hen geen uitzondering maken.
Eigenlijk moeten schakelprogramma’s tussen hbo en universiteit binnen een bacheloropleiding vallen, schrijft Zijlstra in antwoord op vragen van de PvdA. Dat heeft zijn ministerie in 2007 met de universiteiten afgesproken.
Een aantal instellingen, waaronder in elk geval de Vrije Universiteit, is van die afspraak afgeweken. Daardoor moeten sommige studenten sneller de langstudeerboete van ruim drieduizend euro betalen. Ze hebben hun ‘uitloopjaar’ namelijk al verbruikt.
Zijlstra beseft dat dit “vervelend” voor hen is, maar sust dat deze groep studenten waarschijnlijk klein zal zijn. Wie ‘nominaal’ studeert heeft nergens last van en langstudeerders hoeven dit studiejaar nog geen hoog collegegeld te betalen. Pas vanaf september 2012 betalen vertraagde studenten het met ruim drieduizend euro verhoogde tarief, aldus Zijlstra.
De bewindsman heeft de betreffende instellingen gevraagd in kaart te brengen hoe groot de getroffen groep studenten is en met hen te bekijken “hoe zij op een verantwoorde wijze kunnen afstuderen”. Hij is niet bereid een eenmalige uitzondering op de langstudeerboete te maken.
Om welke instellingen het precies gaat, blijkt niet uit de brief. Overigens vallen de pre-masters bij de VU sinds september weer binnen de bachelorfase.
3D Modelling

Transformers
Twenty architecture students site-measured 127 working-class homes, known as the ‘Rode Dorp’ (Red Village), in The Hague last Tuesday. Over the course of the next six months, they will draw up plans for transforming the small houses into student accommodations. Owner Staedion has decided not to demolish the houses but rather to rent them out as student houses for at least the next 25 years. After renovation, that is. The renovation could start as early as this autumn.
Simulation Workshop
Delft will be the host the first ‘Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering’ (Cosse) workshop next week. Students and experts from Sweden (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and Germany (TU Berlin and Friedrich-Alexander University) will meet with their Dutch colleagues for a five-day programme. The programme features visits to Deltares and also the Prinsenhof. “We want to offer students the opportunity to get acquainted with our partner universities,” says Professor Kees Vuik (Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science). “That implies that we offer them some cultural activities as well.” The Cosse workshop, which will have some 30 participants, is the first in what Prof. Vuik hopes will be an annual event aimed at strengthening the ties between the four participating universities. This time, with Holland as host, the theme is water. The presentations reflect this in subjects like ‘delta technology’, sedimentation rates and the complex interactions between water, ice and air.

Bubbles
Hundreds of tests with water flowing down sloping pipes of varying diameters were performed by Ivo Pothof (Civil Engineering and Geosciences), with the aim being to gain a better understanding of the capacity for reducing the effects that air bubbles (‘gas pockets’) have in downward sloping transport pipes. The Capwat research project revealed that the effect is worst for small slopes and large diameters. Pothof will defend his thesis on 4 February.
