Droef Festival 2009

Droevendaal is a ‘hippie community’ where people and nature live together in balance. Green and friendly, there are lots of gardens and open green fields filled with wild animals and birds all around. As for the people, they’re scientists of all kinds, musicians, artists, students and visiting students from around Holland. In short, a great place to spend the weekend!

This weekend the community is hosting its 20th annual ‘Droef-Festival’, where on the stages set up in the green fields local musicians and musicians from Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag will be performing music from all directions: reggae, rock, punk, hip-hop, grunge…. Djs will also play live music from techno to lounge. And some of the community houses will serve as chill zones, where soft music and couches offer a place to quietly hang out and enjoy water-pipes.

For those who cannot resist the desire for self-expression in music, there will also be jam sessions, in which you’re more than welcome to grab a guitar, drums, violin or any other instrument you can find there and make your own music.

Besides music, there will be other action, like open camp fires, games, shaky/pogo dancing and more. Also lots of food for any kind of human being will be on offer, so carnivores will have some meat to gnaw on, and vegans some ‘grass’ to nibble – many of Droevendaal’s citizens are vegetarians. But what’s a party without booze, and there will be plenty of all kinds to buy, but you can also bring your own.

For those new to this country, Wageningen is located somewhere between Arnhem and Utrecht and is easy to get to by car, train or hitchhike. Once in Wageningen, just follow the signs to the Droevendaalsesteeg – or even easier this weekend, just open your ears and go in the direction of the music! Staying over night at the community is no problem, as there are many houses to stay in or you can camp out, but bringing a sleeping bag with you is advised.

Waar ga je naartoe?
“Ik ga lekker naar huis. Ik moet nog studeren.”

Heb je bijna tentamens?
“Nee, in januari pas. Dus ik heb nog even de tijd.”

Wat studeer je?
“Ik studeer luchtvaart- en ruimtevaarttechniek, dat kan in België niet. Ik zit nu in mijn tweede jaar en het bevalt zeer goed.”

Ben je van plan om in Nederland te blijven, omdat het zo goed bevalt?
“Jazeker, ik heb nu ook een Nederlandse vriend.” (lacht)

Wat doe je verder nog buiten je studie?
“Ik hou erg van stappen. Alleen Delft is een beetje saai geworden, er is bijna niets. Breeze, die nieuwe cocktailbar, vind ik wel heel erg leuk. Daar ben ik dus nog wel eens te vinden. Voor de rest ga ik in Den Haag, Rotterdam of Amsterdam uit. En ik doe buiten mijn studie ook veel voor het luchtvaartdispuut van de studievereniging Leonardo da Vinci.”

Ga je vandaag nog wat doen als je klaar bent met studeren?
“Ja, ik moet dadelijk nog wat doen voor het dispuut. En vanavond ga ik iets romantisch doen met mijn vriend. Misschien gaan we wel even een kijkje nemen in het centrum, omdat het lichtjesavond is. Dat schijnt heel erg leuk te zijn.”

Al plannen voor de feestdagen?
“Ja, een beetje. Op kerstavond gaan mijn vriend en ik naar zijn ouders. De kerstdagen brengen we door bij mijn ouders in België. We zijn wel weer gewoon in Nederland met de jaarwisseling. We weten alleen nog niet precies wat we gaan doen. Misschien ’s avonds naar Scheveningen of gewoon het centrum van Delft in. In ieder geval gaan we ergens lekker romantisch vuurwerk kijken.”
