DelftX, now for professionals too

Learning never ends, especially with online education. Alongside the already popular and ever growing number of courses being offered at EdX, , in 2015 the platform launched Professional Education courses for a new demographic in 2015.

Aimed at working professionals and executive level learners interested in furthering their careers, the first five courses are being offered by RiceX, MITx and DelftX.

Taught by TU Delft, Economics of Cybersecurity is the first of the Prof-Ed courses to start next year. The course begins on January 20, 2015 and will go on for forr weeks. Courses include Medicine in the Digital Age, Basics of Energy and Sustainability and Economics of Cybersecurity among others. “Our Professional Education courses will focus on specific industries and skill sets and will cater to schedules of professional learners. These courses may offer continuing education credits or professional education credits,” says the EdX website.

Unlike other MOOCs, students who take Professional Education courses have to pay a fee of $250 and provide proof of identity.

Willem van Valkenburg, Manager Production & Delivery Open, Online & Blended Courses, Delft University of Technology – Extension School, talks about TU Delft’s decision to foray into professional education with cybersecurity. “Currently Cybersecurity is a hot item in the media and there are a lot of people who have to deal with it but lack the knowledge to do so. This course will help them understand the basic economics of cybersecurity from some of the top professors in this field,” said Van Valkenburg.says Willem van Valkenburg, Manager Production & Delivery Open, Online & Blended Courses, Delft University of Technology – Extension School.

The course focuses on four areas; an introduction to key concepts in the economics of cybersecurity, the economics of information security investment, empirical research into security decisions and incentives of actors, and policy and regulations. The idea is that the course makes individuals adept enough to approach their company’s management with suggestions on how to manage cyber security and, in turn, find cost effective solutions.

“This course is created for the working professional. It will be like a MOOC, but with more interaction between the professors and other participants. The number of participants will also be lower than a MOOC,” adds Van Valkenburg.

Since the announcement a month ago, 30 people have already registered and paid for the course. “We are currently setting up the marketing campaign, so we expect that this number will increase to a couple of hundred participants.”

The TU Delft Extension School also offers Continuing Education Units, participants earn a Certificate of Completion and can receive 2.0 Continuing Education Units.
