Delft beyond academics

Delft has lots to offer in terms of academics, but a lesser known fact is that there’s plenty of social life here as well.
Consistently ranked among the top 20 technical schools in Europe, TU Delft has a fine, well-earned reputation for its graduate programs, but besides imparting academic knowledge, the TU also puts in a lot of effort to make the students feel at ease.

As new students will have noticed by now, the university takes special care in introducing fresh graduate and undergraduate students to their new atmosphere, and this is important, as for many international students this marks the first time that they’ve left their home countries.

When asked about her first experiences in Delft, a new MSc computer engineering student from Vietnam, Du Nguyen Hoang Anh, said: “The people are very nice – I’ve been offered help even without asking for it. Even the small shopkeepers try to comprehend what you want and help you. Life should be wonderful here“. About partying, Nguyen says: “I’m a reserved person. I don’t go clubbing or to parties much. But once I came to Delft, I made lots of friends from many countries. Maybe life will change. I’m now looking forward to many house parties and movie nights.”

Although Delft enjoys a fine academic reputation, it also has a reputation as a nerdy little town. Old-time residents might view Delft as a sleepy hamlet, but what do the fresh faces that have been here for just a week or two say about this? “Partying is certainly a forte for Delft,” says Ajay Sharma, a BSC engineering student from India. “The only thing I’ve been doing so far is partying. The male-female ratio is very poor, but the beer is very good!”

True, life definitely does change after one gets a taste of Delft. The university’s skewed boy-girl ratio makes it harder for a guy to find a girl, but new guys to Delft need not despair, as there are plenty of opportunities here for meeting members of the opposite sex.

Salsa parties, held frequently in several places around Delft, are good places to meet new people. Weekend parties at Marcushof are also great places to make new friends. Students should keep an eye out for notices about such events at the university’s Sports Centre and also on student residence notice boards. The TU’s Culture Centre also offers Salsa lessons at special students rates.

Meanwhile, Dutch students talk of a secret recipe to offset this skewed boy-girl ratio: go to Leiden, a student city close to Delft, famed for its student parties, where the skewed boy-girl ratio goes the way and the guys are spoilt for choices.

A wonderful thing about Delft is that it has something for everyone. For party lovers, there’s a vibrant nightlife. For nature lovers, there’s beautiful countryside just outside Delft on the bike paths to Den Hague or Rotterdam. An early morning or late evening bike trip with friends is a perfect getaway. For those souls keen to engage in interesting dinner table conversation while also making new friends, Ifes-Delft hosts intercultural evenings once a month, where the focus is on bringing together students from different cultures over a free meal. And for shopaholics, Saturday markets in Delft are ideal for finding truly Dutch stuff, while Saturday markets in Den Haag offer plenty of Asian foodstuffs.

As the new arrivals to Delft will have already noticed by now, if you spend your time right, the only thing you’ll never here find is boredom.
