Cavitation is the formation of vapour bubbles in low-pressure regions within liquids. It is perhaps best known as the bubbles forming around a ship’s propeller, but it can occur in molten aluminium as well. Atamanenko used water bubbles to study fluid flow patterns during cavitation melt treatment. The influence of cavitation in aluminium melt is manifold. “When the bubbles collapse, this means high temperatures, high pressures and liquid jets on a very local scale. These effects will influence the solidifying material.”

The study of influencing solidifying metal is not new. As early as the 19th century, people shook moulds to get better castings. Fifty years ago, metallurgists in Germany and Russia experimented with ultrasound to improve their castings. “They could produce good results, but nobody understood the process,” Atamanenko says. So, who does now? “I do,” she says, “partially.”

 

Nu de TU Bouwkunde in het voormalige hoofdgebouw aan de Julianalaan wil blijven huisvesten dreigt de TU de 25 miljoen euro mis te lopen, zo meldt het ANP volgens diverse media.

De TU Delft kreeg eind 2008 25 miljoen euro van minister Plasterk voor een nieuw gebouw voor het afgebrande Bouwkunde. Dat nieuwe gebouw moest een icoon worden van de Nederlandse architectuur. De steun van Plasterk zou het verschil maken tussen een goed gebouw en een icoon.

Na de brand kreeg de TU ook 118,5 miljoen euro uitgekeerd van verzekeraars. Van dat verzekeringsgeld was zestig miljoen euro bestemd voor investering in vastgoed. Het overige geld was voor inventaris en voorlopige voorzieningen.

Tot nu toe is volgens de TU in totaal 55 miljoen euro uitgegeven aan de herhuisvesting van Bouwkunde aan de Julianalaan. Dat is geen eindbedrag: om het pand te laten voldoen aan eisen van onder meer duurzaamheid is nog een bedrag van ongeveer dertig miljoen euro nodig.
