Construction work for International Student House

The start of construction work on the International Student House on Prof. Schermerhornstraat last Thursday afternoon signals the last phase of the redevelopment of the TU Noord campus.

This new construction project by student accommodation provider DUWO comprises 332 non-independent housing units for foreign students. Each unit has its own shower and toilet, with shared living room and kitchen facilities.

The ground floor of the complex contains 1,700 m2 of commercial premises. Part of this, and the adjacent TU Delft building at Kanaalweg 4, will contain various facilities for foreign students. These include a Grand Café, student health care, a gym, meeting rooms and rooms for international study associations and student clubs.

The International Student House (ISH) is also intended to function as a sort of ‘living room’ for Delft students, in particular the around 2,400 foreign students studying in Delft temporarily. The building is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016.

In front of the building will be a square where people can come together from all over the campus. The complex itself is built around a courtyard. To the rear of the building will be a public park with generous green areas and water, adjoining the Botanical Garden.

A new entrance on Mijnbouwstraat will open onto the park, the square and Professor Schermerhornstraat. This entrance will also lead to the car park for the complex. The park and the square should be completed by mid-2017.

Nearby, in the building at Kanaalweg 3a, will be 47 residential units for doctoral candidates. One of the two antique lecture theatres in the building will be renovated and will be part of the International Student House. In addition to the 47 doctoral candidates, the building will also contain the new DUWO office.

The complete redevelopment of the area is being carried out in collaboration with the city of Delft and TU Delft. So on Thursday the first stake was driven into the ground by alderman Lennart Harpe and Executive Board member Anka Mulder.

The construction of the ISH is the final phase in the redevelopment of the TU Noord area, where in recent years DUWO has already built or redeveloped two student housing complexes from old university buildings: the new complex with 297 units on De Vries van Heijstplantsoen and 95 units on Mijnbouwplein. Upon completion the TU Delft Noord area will be home to around 750 students.
