Mine Detection

Not only dogs and rats can sniff out explosives. Genetically modified bacteria can do so too. Or so students from TU Delft, Leiden University and the Hogeschool Rotterdam believe.

In November they will present their invention, a modified Escherichia coli bacterium called Ellactrace, at the International Genetically Engineered Machines competition, held at MIT. Ellactrace must create a little electrical current when exposed to explosive chemicals. The students are using bio bricks sent to them by MIT. These are standardized bits of DNA that have known effects in the cell and can be used as building blocks.
