Delft Urban Water Movie Contest

Living in a delta city can provide many advantages and opportunities, but it also presents risks and challenges. The Delft Urban Water Movie Contest challenges you to present your ideas about living with water in a city. And you could win €1000 or an iPad 4 if they like your idea the best.

The movie contest is sponsored by Delft Urban Water Centre, a partnership of four organizations: TU Delft, UNESCO-IHE, Deltares and KWR Watercycle Research Institute. They aim to become the meeting place for scientists, students, policymakers and other interested parties concerned with the subject of water in urban areas. According to their website, “By combining expertise we want to tackle future problems of increasing urbanisation, flooding and a worldwide shortage of good quality water”.

You can enter the contest with almost any type of moving image, with a maximum length of 3 minutes. Sahana Singh was the winner of the first contest in 2012, with her short film entitled “The Forgotten Cycle”.  Singh is the editor of Asian Water, a leading publication on water and wastewater with a special focus on the Asian region. She has been involved with the water sector for over 15 years. “I have always wanted to make a film on water that goes beyond the usual ‘conserve water’ message and gets people acquainted with the real  issues surrounding that precious liquid we cannot live without. I was thrilled when TU Delft recognized my film with the first prize”.

According to Dr. Marie-claire ten Veldhuis , you don’t have to be a water expert to participate. Ten Veldhuis is Assistant Professor for Urban Drainage at TU Delft and also a member of the Delft Urban Water Centre. “Water is very much a part of daily life. But water presents difficulties, particularly in developing communities”, she says. “We are challenging people to present ideas about problems they see in their environment. There are many interesting issues being raised by non-researchers”.

Singh encourages others to get involved. “I think the Delft Urban Water Movie Contest is an excellent initiative to focus attention on water”, she states. “It is important for citizens to be concerned about where their drinking water comes from, where their wastewater goes and about the water footprint of all the products they use in daily life”.
